We will survive, says Arnett coach
published: Friday | April 18, 2008

Anthony Foster, Freelance Writer

FOLLOWING HORACE Sharpe's first-half penalty, which lifted Arnett Gardens off the bottom of the National Premier League standings, coach Jerome Waite promised his team's supporters the side will remain in the league come next season.

"I guarantee that my team will be in the Premier League next year," Waite said after Sharpe's 17th-minute penalty carried Arnett Gardens to a 1-0 win over Harbour View at the Tony Spaulding Complex on Wednesday.

Ninth place

Arnett Gardens entered the match at the bottom of the 12-team standings but the win lifted them to 39 points and ninth place."We put ourselves into this position, so we have to take ourselves out of it," Waite said, while praising his team for its gallant effort.

"Players just need to go out there and play as expected. They have done it today, which they have not done for quite some time, so we just expect them to move forward from here on," he said.

Sharpe scored the game's lone goal from the spot after Harbour View's goalkeeper, Dwayne Miller, brought down Kenrick Rodriques inside the area.

Ball possession

After that, Harbour View had more ball possession but Arnett Gardens had far more shots on goal.

Arnett's Rodriques came close to score in the 40th minute but his shot from left of the six-yard box went wide.

In the second half, Harbour View's Jermaine Hue was red-carded for an off-the-ball incident, which immediately weakened the team's attack.

Again, Arnett Gardens threatened but poor finishing from Fabian Davis, Donovan Bernard and Sharpe kept the margin at a single goal.

Harbour View's coach, Lenworth Hyde, was a disappointed man. "We did not play any ball today," Hyde said. "The discipline in the team broke down ... Arnett wanted it more than us, hence that's why they got the points," he said.

Inconsistency

Hyde put his team's poor performance down to 'inconsistency'.

"We play good today, tomorrow we don't play good. It's been a very inconsistent season for us," he said, while claiming that the long season was taking a toll of his team.
