Put prisoners to grow food
published: Wednesday | April 23, 2008

The Editor, Sir:

With the looming global food crisis, it is full time that we get our creative juices flowing. We have a large population of prisoners who are, in my estimation, mostly idle, and living off the hard-earned dollar of taxpayers.

Prisons should be revenue-generating entities. With several acreages of government land laying waste, these prisoners should be cultivating it and earning their bread.

This will undoubtedly be rehabilitative - teaching them to be responsible for themselves - being proactive in determining their future.

Create entrepreneurs

The ministry responsible for the prisons should embark on setting up several subgroups within these prisons and help to create entrepre-neurs out of these men and women who may not have the opportunity otherwise. Teach them to work and earn an honest bread.

One may think this may be a security risk. However, this would be a perfect opportunity for our soldiers to handle this branch of security. We would be solving a multitude of problems with such an initiative.

I am, etc.,
