An amazing editorial
published: Saturday | May 3, 2008

The Editor, Sir:

What an amazing editorial on Thursday, 'Food security and Caribbean integration'!

Michael Manley, fulfilling his "Next time! Next time!" threat when he led a protest march against The Gleaner in September 1976, has apparently captured the paper from beyond the grave.

Protecting regional agriculture? Forcing people to consume local foods at higher prices? In 2008? The paper forgot to add 'forcing' the European Union/United Kingdom to buy our bananas and sugar at preferential rates and 'forcing' the United States to send more tourists!

One-off departure

Truly an amazing performance, hopefully a one-off departure in an off-guard moment, by this great newspaper founded on the principles of free and fair trade and to which the Jamaican people have looked for a defence of their freedom in difficult times past.

The cartoon on the facing page showing the Jamaican public being force-fed cassava - by the Government through its Minister of Agriculture - is in fabulous contrast to the editorial and a more intellectually robust commentary.

I am, etc.,

MARTIN HENRY
