Vying for visas
published: Friday | May 16, 2008

The Editor, Sir:

I noticed that the United States Embassy recently introduced a system whereby persons holding multiple visas were given a special day - Mondays between the hours of 11:30 and 1:30 - to have their expired visas renewed.

This new system was designed to expedite the reissuance of visitors' visas, and I suppose to give first-time applicants a better opportunity of securing an appointment date.

However, this was cancelled, pending further studies to review security measures, because of the disorderly crowd of applicants who were unable to form a line for access into the embassy. These disorderly applicants, I am sure, are our very own Jamaicans, and perhaps a few others.

Much has been said about the treatment meted out to Jamaicans by the embassies in Jamaica. Interesting, too, was the recent view that we are treated as goats, but honestly, do we stop to think whether or not we are the very ones who bring this on ourselves?

Simple task

The simple task of forming a line to better assist us through a process has proven too difficult for us. Maybe this is one reason why we are held at bay by these embassies.

Until further notice from the United States Embassy, we once again have to wait for a long time to gain an appointment to visit the embassy. And we wonder why we are treated the way we are!

I am, etc.,
