The Editor, Sir:
The question of who will do a better job cannot be isolated from the national political will, which will see the provision of adequate resources and manpower that will guarantee the achievement of set goals within the Ministry of National Security.
We must, therefore, include in the equation the role that civil society must play in controlling the beast of crime, which is affecting us all. Let me, therefore, offer my bit to the new minister of national security towards the creation of a safer community and society, which all of us long for.
Tough statements
He should start the job with tough statements aimed at the creation of social order, ensuring good social behaviour by students, musicians, security forces and adults in general, and be willing to take unpopular decisions.
There should be advocacy for a penalty of no less than 30 years for the possession of an illegal weapon and death on the gallows if it can be proven that murder was committed with the gun.
Break the backs of all garrisons and ensure social intervention to the greater good of such communities and Jamaica in general.
There should be greater levels of proactive police relations on the ground and the rebranding and repositioning of the Neighbourhood Watch programme across Jamaica.
