Grenadians to vote July 8
published: Tuesday | June 3, 2008

Mitchell

ST GEORGE'S, Grenada (CMC):

Prime Minister Dr Keith Mitchell on Sunday night announced Tuesday, July 8, as the date for general election in Grenada.

Addressing a rally of his ruling New National Party (NNP) in the west coast fishing town of Gouyave, Mitchell said police personnel would vote on July 3 and that Nomination Day for the election will be on June 18.

The NNP is expected to face a strong challenge from the main opposition National Democratic Party (NDC). The other party expected to contest the poll is the Grenada United labour Party (GULP) that was formed by the late Grenadian prime minister Sir Eric Gairy.

Mitchell said the Parliament would be prorogued today.

In the last general election, the NNP won eight of the 15 seats at stake with the other seven going to the NDC.
