The Editor, Sir:
This is an open letter to the relevant authorities and/or the National Works Agency to suggest erecting overhead passes for pedestrian traffic in Half-Way Tree.
There is a dire need for these to be erected as there is a great deal of traffic, both pedestrian and vehicular, which leads to unnecessary congestion and motor vehicle accident risk. These overhead passes should be placed at: Constant Spring Road - from the Jamaica National building to the Half-Way Tree Transportation Centre (HWTTC); Half-Way Tree Road - from NCB to York Pharmacy; Eastwood Park Road - from the northwest end of the HWTTC directly across the road.
Vehicles, pedestrians benefit
It seems that these are the three main areas where pedestrians cross these major thoroughfares and both vehicles and pedestrians would benefit from overhead bridges being placed at these strategic points.
Of course, ramps and/or special elevators should be installed to facilitate disabled pedestrians. If elevators are installed then these should be manned to ensure that they are not abused, used only by those who need them (disabled and elderly) and their use relegated to certain key hours of the day (e.g. 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.).
I am, etc.,
