Harmonics to play winning tune
published: Wednesday | June 4, 2008

Orville Clarke, Freelance Reporter

Today's Caymanas Park mid-week feature for the Alty McKenzie Memorial Cup ($270,000-$240,000 claiming), over 1600 metres, looks tailored for HARMONICS, an easy winner over the distance on April 26.

Owned by Jockeys' Enterprise and trained by Stanford Champegnie, HARMONICS is one of five recent winners in the line-up. He is pitted against WHEELS OF LAW and WINNING MESSAGE, who won last Saturday and Wednesday, respectively, as well as SIR ROMEL, who notched an overdue win over 2000 metres on May 23, not to mention the Champegnie-trained HEART'S CRY, who won narrowly over the distance on a $180,000 claiming tag May 3.

The Robert Darby-trained WHEELS OF LAW scored a 39-1 upset over the straight-five course in Race No. 5 of the CTL Claiming series and is up in class today.

Slammed rivals

WINNING MESSAGE, on the other hand, slammed rivals over 1300 metres to record his fifth win of the season on a $260,000 claiming tag.

Even with the trip extended and burdened by the top weight of 57.0kg, WINNING MEASURE should play a prominent role in the outcome with in-form Dane Nelson aboard.

WHEELS OF LAW, though fit and consistent, should find a mile taxing, while HEART'S CRY has more to find at this level. SIR ROMEL, the mount of champion jockey Omar Walker, would prefer two turns.

That leaves the stretch-running RAINBOW TRAIN, who proved competitive (third) behind CAPTAIN BONE in Saturday's Billy Pick Memorial Cup feature over 2000 metres, as the horse capable of carrying the fight to my selection HARMONICS and also WINNING MESSAGE.

HARMONICS, to be ridden by 4.0kg claiming apprentice Kevin Blake, gets the nod on the strength of his easy victory over the distance on April 26 when leading home subsequent winner SIR ROMEL by 4-1/2 lengths in the fairly good time of 1:41.4.

Far from disgraced

Next time out, on May 10, the seven-year-old gelding was far from disgraced when finishing 4-1/4 lengths fifth to BADJEROS ROSE over 1500 metres on a $325,000 claiming tag, a race in which he chased the winner to the last furlong in a particular split time of 1:14.2 for the first 1200 metres.

Now dropped in class and given this milder pace, HARMONICS will prove hard to beat from the convenient mark of 52.0kg. WINNING MESSAGE should run well despite top weight, but the principal danger to HARMONICS must be RAINBOW TRAIN, who had him behind on May 10 when making late headway to finish 2-1/2 lengths third to BADJEROS ROSE in that 1500-metre race. However, the easier pace will suit HARMONICS.

Other firm fancies on the card are GOOD HOPE, who ran creditably behind IT IS I in the recent Lotto Classic is expected to rebound in the first race, FIDDLE STICKS in the third, PISON to make all in the eighth, BULLET TRAIN in the 11th and CALVIN THE GREAT in the 12th and final.
