England on brink of victory
published: Sunday | June 8, 2008

NOTTINGHAM, England (AP):

ENGLAND WERE on the brink of a 2-0 series win yesterday after dismissing New Zealand for 123 and reducing the tourists to 177-5 after forcing the follow on.

New Zealand trailed England by 64 runs at stumps on the third day of the third Test at Trent Bridge.

The Kiwis advanced from 42-2 at tea to a score bigger than their first innings total of 123 largely due to Brendon McCullum, whose 71 was the highest of his team this match.

McCullum reached his 10th Test 50 with a boundary off Ryan Sidebottom, who had nearly caught and bowled him when he was on 33.

Test-best haul

He was bowled by James Anderson, who had earlier finished New Zealand's first innings with a Test-best haul of 7-43. England paceman Stuart Broad also took two wickets in each of the day's innings.

"Hopefully we'll wake up tomorrow and it will swing like it did today," Broad said. "Five wickets to go, we've got to look to not bat again but ... if they get 180 ahead, we'll back ourselves to get there."

Daniel Flynn, who had shared a fourth wicket partnership of 94 with McCullum, scored a Test-best 49. He edged a Sidebottom delivery to England wicketkeeper Tim Ambrose shortly before stumps.

Flynn needed dental surgery after losing two front teeth after being hit in the face by a bouncer from Anderson in the previous Test in Manchester.

At stumps, Gareth Hopkins was unbeaten on seven and Jacob Oram not out eight.
