How far would you go for charity? Well, if you're anything like Archbishop Dr John Sentamu of England, the sky is no limit.

The 58-year-old Uganda-born clergyman, who is the second most senior cleric in the Church of England, did a charity skydive recently to raise funds for the Afghanistan Trust, which assists wounded paratroopers.

Sentamu was strapped to a member of the Red Devils display team for the tandem jump from 12,500ft in London.

"I was praying like anybody's business up there. It was an amazing, amazing experience," he said.

Serving paratrooper Lance Cpl Lee Read accompanied the Archbishop of York as they did a 45-second free fall.

Two other Red Devils joined them with plumes of orange smoke billowing from canisters on their legs.

Then he went into a sitting position and landed on Langar Airfield, Notts.

Upon landing, Sentamu said: "I thought to myself, why have I taken so long to do this?"
