"It was a well-deserved victory," says Christine Bartley, coach of the Sharpes women's team following their 6-0 win over Excelsior in the Jamaica Hockey Federation (JHF) Premier League competition on the weekend.
Sharpes, through a hat-trick from Erica May-Chambers and a brace from Rosemarie Campbell, with the other goal coming off the stick of Andrea Hoo-Thomas, are now in third place in the league on nine points. St Andrew are currently the league leaders on 13, followed by Tropics on 11.
Tactical weaknesses
"We still have some weaknesses in our tactical area but we are happy for the win. We will just have to continue improving and hopefully move into the top two," Bartley said.
Sharpes' male counterparts moved to second in their competition on seven points after a 1-1 draw with group leaders the Jamaica Defence Force (JDF), who also have seven points. Giovanni Gordon netted for Sharpes and Jeon Brown equalised for the JDF, both scoring in the first half.
Raiders United recorded their first victory of the season, defeating Combined Colleges 4-2. Rashaan Smith, Akiel Creary, Nicholas Beach and Brian Brodber scored for Raiders, while Orville Hicks and Kwame Emmanuel netted for the Colleges.
In the games scheduled for Saturday at the Mona Astro Turf, Sharpes Rebels will face Combined Colleges in men's action at 3:00 p.m. and in women's action Sharpes will play Excelsior at 4:30 p.m.
On Sunday, Circus Circle and JDF will face each other at 3 p.m. and Raiders United will oppose Explorers at 4:30 p.m.
