On collecting back taxes
published: Saturday | June 14, 2008

The Editor, Sir,

If the Government plans to collect the taxes to finance the budget, they definitely need to retrain the staff at the Tax Office.

The Demand Notice from the Inland Revenue Department to a member of the private sector shows demands for payment of between two cents and eight cents dating from way back in 1998 resulting in a bill for accumulated interest and penalties of $104.96!

Demand notices

Now, how many hours, computer time etc, has it taken since 1998 to prepare these demand notices which are sent out every month at a cost of $30 postage each time?

Boy, do we have a problem! Can't someone at the Revenue Board advise the workers there that it would be far more useful to dedicate time to bringing in those who pay no taxes and make no returns rather than harassing legitimate business people for two cents at a cost of $30 in postage, not to mention the colossal waste of manhours?

I am, etc,

JOAN WILLIAMS
