  • RBTT free to close Worldwise accounts

The Supreme Court yesterday gave RBTT Bank the go-ahead to close the accounts of investment club Worldwise Partners Ltd.

Worldwise, which trades in foreign exchange, was seeking an injunction to bar RBTT from closing the accounts until the suit it has filed in the Supreme Court is heard and determined.

In November last year, the bank served notice on Worldwise that it had plans to close its accounts at the end of March.

  • Government moved against Delapenha's illegally

The Supreme Court has issued a declaration that the then minister of local government and environment acted unlawfully when he stopped development work by Delapenha's Funeral Home at the Royal Rest Cemetery in Burnt Ground, Hanover in 2006.

Justice Ingrid Mangatal granted the declaration yesterday after hearing legal arguments in the Supreme Court.

The judge said Dean Peart, the then minister who stopped the work, acted outside of his power under the National Resources Conservation Act. The judge said the decision was an improper exercise of the then minister's power under the act on the grounds of "unreasonableness and irrationality."

  • St Ann suspects held

As the police in St Ann continue their investigations into the June 2 murder of a security guard and robbery of millions of dollars in cash in Ocho Rios, five suspects have been taken into custody for questioning.

The suspects were picked up between Monday and Thursday and Crime Chief for St Ann Deputy Superintendent Bertram Lee said the police are still seeking other suspects in relation to the incident.
