Parking predators
published: Friday | July 4, 2008

The Editor, Sir:

I endorse what one of your letter writers mentioned about extortioners charging for parking on an empty lot between the Kingston Parish Church and the Pearnel Charles Arcade. This is repeated all over the city.

A former parking area for visitors to the Kingston Public Hospital has also been taken over by racketeers/extortioners. It is so shameful to see big men, about six of them, charging poor visitors $100 to park on land that does not belong to them. Again, this is being done under the nose of the security force which has a post at the KPH.

Case on Darling Street

This also happens on Darling Street beside the Coronation Market. Young men who have taken over the shed of a bus stop, selling drinks etc, suddenly pounce on you and demand $50 for parking in what is clearly free parking provided for users of the market by the KSAC.

I would like Mayor McKenzie to look into these matters, along with the police. Where is zero tolerance? Only lip service.

I am, etc,

DELORIS SMITH
