Avalanche, Hawks top Zone B
published: Friday | July 4, 2008

WESTERN BUREAU:

MID-SEASON CHAMPIONS Inner City Avalanche registered back-to-back wins last weekend to join Sav Hawks as leaders in Zone B in the play-off phase of the Western Basketball Association (WBA) Lucozade Championship.

In Zone A, the ominous-looking Hoopers, who have been having a very good season, took over sole leadership of the group following their comprehensive 80-67 win over Granville Wolfpack, which gives them a play-off record of three wins from three starts.

On Friday night, the Avalanche outfit was stretched to the limit by Hawks but held on for a 73-70 win. Cleon Morgan, with 22 points and 10 rebounds, and Wayne Morris, with 14 points, were outstanding for Avalanche.

Good service

Despite their defeat, the Hawks aggregation, which now has three wins and one defeat in four games, got good service from Kareem Hibbert, who had a game-high 23 points, Dillon Hodges, who got 15 points and 15 rebounds, and Kenneth Blackwood, who scored 11 points.

In their game on Sunday night, the Galton Taylor-coached Avalanche were awesome in blowing away Lane Tigers, 80-40. Chayne Topey, who got 12 points, was the top scorer for Avalanche. He was supported by Wayne Morris and Cleon Morgan who got 10 apiece.

In their game on Sunday, Hoopers were clinical in blunting the challenge of Granville Wolfpacks 90-87. It was a solid all-round team effort for Hoopers as Andrae Morgan (18 points), Omar Taylor (12 points) and Nicholas Daye and Neville Claire (10 points each) all contributed to the scoring.

While losing, Granville Wolfpack could take heart from the performances of Andre Uter, who had 26 points, Vaughn Lee, who had 17 points and 12 rebounds, and Dwight Clare, who had 11 points.

STANDINGS

Zone A

Hoopers 6, Granville Jaguars 5, Granville Wolfpack 4.
