EDMONTON, Alberta (CMC):Barbadian jockey Rickey Walcott used clever front-running tactics and registered an upset victory astride the three-year-old gelding Garys Buddy in the Western Canada Stakes at North-lands Park on Tuesday afternoon.
Going off at odds of 9-to-1, Garys Buddy won the Cdn$50,000 event by 3-1/4 lengths. He defeated the favourite Little Davey (3-5) with Barbadian jockey Quincy Welch riding and stopped the clock at one minute 16.60 seconds for the 6-1/2 furlong trip.
Least supported
Garys Buddy was the second least supported in the betting in the seven-horse field and showed good speed to lead on the inside early while being pressed by Little Davey.
Walcott, the Northlands Park champion jockey for the past three years, roused his mount into a clear lead entering the final turn and ran stoutly down the homestretch to score easily.
Little Davey held off It's Launch Time (11-2) - under Desmond Bryan - by a neck to secure second spot as Barbadian riders picked up the top three spots in the race.
Walcott secured a second win on the card, scoring in the Cdn$7,100 third race over six furlongs with the three-year-old gelding Panzer Pride (7-1).
Panzer Pride was promoted to first place after the disqualification of original winner All About Beau (4-1).
Jockeys' standings
With nine wins in the week-and-a-half old season, Walcott is lying third in the jockeys' table behind Shannon Beauregard (11) and Stephan Heiler (10).
Bryan, Welch and Walkout's younger brother Rico Walcott also had wins on the card for Barbadians to log wins in five of the eight races on the card.
Bryan landed the Cdn$18,200 fifth race over 6-1/2 furlongs with the 3-1 favourite All the Rightnotes by a length in 1:19.00.
