The Editor, Sir:
I read an article recently where it stated among other things that the University of Technology will be launching its law faculty in 2009. What a great idea! Although I do question UTech's level of organisation and preparedness, as at times it seems to lack lustre. It is a step in the right direction and I do endorse this.
I am pro University of the West Indies (UWI) for most things since I pursued studies there, and for me, it is the premier university of the Caribbean, and I love the school dearly. However, it does need another wake-up call; the offshore universities came and tapped into an expanding market and created a flexible alternative to UWI. UTech can do the same!!
A faculty of law at UTech is a great idea and to think that the students will not have to leave Jamaica and suffer in Barbados if they can't afford it. It is so enticing! While living in Barbados might be exciting for a few and good for Caribbean integration, it is a luxury that not many of us have been able to afford.
It seems as though legal studies will be integrated in many aspects of the UTech's studies and law will not be the preserve of a few. Can you imagine if this existed a long time ago how many of us would have had our law degrees already?
What a glorious development?! UWI and its elitism will once again be challenged.
I am, etc,
