Blackwood resilient...but Jamaica lose close match
published: Saturday | July 12, 2008

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados (CMC):

Montserrat's 16-year-old off-spinner Tevin Osbourne produced a four-wicket burst to lift the Leeward Islands to victory over Jamaica on the third and final day of their TCL Group West Indies Under-19 second-round match yesterday.

Set 231 to win, the Jamaicans were threatening the target at Lester Vaughn School when Osbourne swung the game for the Leewards, to snatch victory shortly after tea with Jamaica's innings folding for 213.

Jamaica's opening batsman Nick Blackwood played with resilience for an unbeaten 86, but he ran out of partners and the Leewards celebrated their first win of the 2008 series.

From an overnight 54 for two and needing an additional 177 runs for victory, the Jamaicans gathered 57 runs for the loss of one wicket in an abbreviated morning session.

rain forced delay

Captain and West Indies Youth (Under-19) player Andre Creary carried his overnight score of eight to 35 before he was out, just as rain forced the players off the field at 11:20 local time. Attacking the left-arm spinner Jurnell Turner, Creary lofted the ball to Adelvin Phillip on the long-on boundary and went to lunch at 111 for three.

Play resumed for the post-lunch session at 12:30 with Kennar Lewis hitting 23 before he departed - at 141 for four - in identical fashion to his captain, aiming for maximum against Turner.

Blackwood moved to his 50 in 230 minutes off 168 balls with five boundaries, playing with great determination to see Jamaica to maximum points. But he lost four partners before tea, as the Jamaicans slid to 210 for eight in a gripping tussle for victory.

Coming back from the break at 210 for eight, the Jamaicans lost their remaining wickets quickly.
