Rayon rises to the occasion
published: Tuesday | July 15, 2008

IT WAS Roy Rayon's night at the National Indoor Sports Centre in St Andrew, Saturday. The singer won the Festival Song competition for the fourth time with his Rise and Shine.

Rayon's entry was a crowd favourite and it came as no surprise when the judges gave him the nod over his nine rivals. He took home the main prize of $1 million.

Eric Donaldson, a five-time winner, was recognised for his contribution to the contest, which he won for the first time in 1971 with Cherry Oh Baby. He was presented with a tribute award by Olivia Grange, the minister of information, sports, youth and culture.

The Festival Song competition was first held in 1966. Toots and the Maytals won the inaugural contest with Bam Bam.

Natalee 'Versatile' Edwards, the lone female contestant, was also dressed for the occasion. She performed her entry, 'We Need Love'.
