Toasting the greats
published: Tuesday | July 15, 2008

Leroy Sibbles

Singers Toots Hibbert, Leroy Sibbles and Sugar Minott will be the toast of this year's Tribute To The Greats show, scheduled for the Curphey Place in St Andrew on July 26.

Kingsley Goodison, the show's founder and promoter, said impressario Tommy Cowan and his older brother, musicologist Bunny Goodison, will also be honoured. Maurice 'Persian The Cat' Samuels, dance promoter Thelma 'Dimples' Harris and the Hully Gully Dancers, complete the list of honourees.

"It's very important that we recognise the contributions of these people. It shows how far we've come," he said.

Toots and Sibbles came to prominence as lead singers of The Maytals and The Heptones, respectively. The former won a Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album in 2005 for True Love.

Sugar Minott's career took off in the 1970s when he recorded at Studio One for producer Clement 'Coxsone' Dodd. He is also a respected independent producer.

Tributes To The Greats was first held in 1997.
