HOTTEST TOPICS ON THE COCKTAIL CIRCUIT

An oriental force

1 People are asking where does he find the time to do double duties. This is a man who has been given a demanding portfolio. And from all reports, he is doing a reasonable job, as he has taken time to learn the intricacies of the task at hand and has interacted with key stakeholders. But, in-between home and work, there is a third force of the oriental type. Friends who are aware of the happenings fear a major explosion if the missus ever finds out.

The purloined robe

2 Executives at a certain public agency are watching with interest as the current legal challenges unfold. Not far from their minds is a most embarrassing incident when an executive of the agency visited a certain north-coast hotel and left with the beautiful terry bathrobe. Recognising that the guest had purloined the robe, the hotel's accounts department promptly billed the agency. Needless to say, the bill was approved and payment made. The question is, who owns the robe?

Sleeping policemen

3Neither the police nor the municipal powers know about extortion in Spanish Town, from all accounts. It is a secret which business people in that beleaguered parish capital have kept to themselves. Our investigations reveal that taxi and bus operators are called on three times a day to pay up. If they hesitate, they are properly abused physically and verbally. Since the police are not aware of what takes place there, they are being advised to spend a few hours in the bus park. They will observe men dressed in crisp white shirts and jeans making the rounds. We guarantee that the extortion racket could be blown apart with minimal effort.

4. House thieves

4A St Ann man who went on an extended vacation recently returned home to find that his property had been rented to persons without his permission. The fake landlord had collected three months' rent and simply disappeared. Now the man is having a hard time getting out the tenants who are waiving their one-year lease in his face. This is a regular occurrence in states like California, but now it is happening right on our doorsteps. Added to that kind of real-estate scam, squatting has taken on new dimensions, because it is happening in upscale neighbourhoods like Jacks Hill and Cherry Gardens. In one case, a well-heeled businessman has been occupying a dwelling for nearly 10 years without paying a cent in rent. Family members have tried the court route, but so far, no joy.
