When Portia held the fort
published: Thursday | July 17, 2008

The Editor, Sir:

Before there is to be another bitter campaign for the presidency of the PNP, let me just say my little two-cents on the matter at hand. In the last race for the presidency of the party, Portia Simpson Miller was referred to as a lot of things and the most resounding of all was her educational stature.

If Mrs Simpson Miller was not an able-bodied person for the post, would she have been in the top 100 most powerful women in the world, would the then Prime Minister PJ Patterson not have given her the various ministries to run and since Mr Phillips is so all that, what is his rank again?

Power-hungry mentality

Let it be clearly stated that back in the day when Peter, Maxine and the others went to study, Mrs Simpson Miller was there holding the fort. However, it is quite evident that Mr Phillips' bid for the leadership of the party is one of a power-hungry mentality.

Let it be noted that it was not because of Mrs Simpson Miller's assumed incompetence why the party did not win, but it was because of the hysteria within the main contending camp. Moreover, the majority of the electorate were young adults to the process, who needed to see and feel a wave of change and who would, at that period of the PNP scuffle, put their country in a state of disunity.

I am, etc.,
