Negative Jamaica image abroad
published: Thursday | July 17, 2008

THE EDITOR, Sir:

IT IS so amazing the kind of interviews that journalists from across the universe can come to Jamaica and obtain from our gang members. It takes roughly two weeks for a number of interviews to be done by an outsider for the National Geographic programme with Ross Kemp. My question is, what is the intelligence arm of the Constabulary Force doing? This reporter, regardless of when these interviews were done, was able to get into areas, and speak with the dons and men with lots of guns.

Image not encouraging

When this image of Jamaica is shown globally, people are going to ask lots of questions about our police force intelligence units. When I saw this report aired on Tuesday, July 15, in North America, I understood why Jamaica and Zimbabwe are tied as the worst places to live in regards to crime and violence.

The authorities need to take control of the crime situation as our image overseas is not an encouraging one for direct investments and tourism. I am pleading with the authorities to get the intelligence units up and running as this is vital in breaking the back of crime in this country.

I am, etc.,
