Confidence needed
As Jamaica seems to drift along on the tide of history, I see no one among the present crop of politicians who has what it takes to pull this country out of the nosedive in which we find ourselves.
I know it takes everyone pulling together to turn Jamaica around, but this will not happen without a confident person in charge. The fight among the Opposition party leadership won't give us that person.

Positive Jamaica
The article, 'What is right with Jamaica' by Mark Kerr-Jarrett, which was published in the Jamaica Gleaner online on July 21 was a breath of fresh air. Therefore, I am writing this letter to congratulate him.
For a change, there is something positive that is written about Jamaica. Too often when one reads articles in the newspaper, it gives a negative picture of Jamaica. Kerr-Jarrett suggested we balance the good with bad. Jamaica must not be overwhelmed with the negatives, but work to achieve unity of purpose.

Pregnant & HIV-positive
I read the article in the Flair magazine (July 21) about the young girl who found out she was HIV-positive at age 17 when she was pregnant.
I must say I felt it for her because I was in the same position when I found out, only I was older than she.
I must tell her she did the right thing by carrying her baby despite her condition. But what really brought me to tears is when I read the part where you say she is now pregnant again and that her current boyfriend is also HIV-positive. Is she the one that caused him to be positive. and if yes, why did she do that?

The real problems
A brief response to an open letter to from a Mr Nugent of St Ann's Bay.
Garrisons are the problems. Jamaicans and visitors still cannot move around this country freely.
Then, we urgently need a police force/service. Because we really do not have one. And third, extortion!
But they are not like cancer, diabetes and high blood pressure. They can be eliminated!

Correction & Clarification
The Gleaner, July 25, 2008, under the heading ‘Pregnant and HIV-positive’, the writer of the letter was erroneously identified as Patrecia Minzie of Chisholm Avenue, Kingston 13. The correct information should have read: Patrica McKenzie of Chelsea Avenue, Kingston 10 (mckenziepatrica@yahoo.com).
