Don't coat me!

For some entertainers, style takes precedence - even over practicality. Imported fashion, such as coats have been forever included in the wardrobe of many artistes, be it to create an image or garner attention.

Fashion experts insist the rules of fashion are simple - always, if nothing else, be practical. This does not mean sacrificing your image or sense of style.

And, designer Jeannie 'Didi' Beck agrees.

"Style is the way you carry yourself, the vibe you give off, how you look in the clothes as opposed to how the clothes looks on you," said the 16-year-old, who recently showcased her designs at Caribbean Fashionweek (CFW).

As for coats in Jamaica, Earl 'Biggie' Turner said they are useful for making a statement, but not for extended wear.

"Coats are not practical, it's a part of the look and presents an image but it is not realistic," said the designer for 'the Grammy Kid', DJ Shabba Ranks, and a host of other current artistes.

"The coat would be a part of the look, so you would make your grand entrance and loose the coat," he said.

'Didi' believes wearability and comfort are important as well.

As for 16-year-old Paula-Dean Nesbeth, donning a coat this summer is out of the question.

"No, not at all, it is extremely hot!," she said.

"I don't think a coat is very practical, we live in Jamaica and it's summer, sweating in a coat means that something is wrong."
