The Editor, Sir:
I applaud the stated efforts of the 'powers that be' to seek and apply alternative and more sustainable sources of fuel/power than oil.
I am very dismayed, however, to even hear the word 'nuclear' spoken as a possibility. This is not only a very dangerous source of power, but one that comes with a huge toxic waste disposal problem.
In a country like Jamaica, we need to go to solar and wind power as soon as possible - both of which are non-toxic. We also need to produce our own biodiesel fuel from used or unused vegetable oils.
All of these actions would create many jobs and decrease expenses in the long term.
In addition, our farmers need to go organic, use compost as fertilizer (which builds up the soil rather than destroy it) and tap into the growing worldwide market for wholesome, organic, chemical-free foods, herbs and spices.
I urge all entrepreneurs to get their good Jamaican ingenuity in gear and guide us forward.
I am, etc.,
