The public is being bombarded by reports of child abuse and the Child Development Agency has advertisements telling everyone of his or her duty to report abuse. The disappointment and frustration that greeted me on Monday, July 14, at the Harbour View Police Station when I went to help a child in need has left me with a bitter taste. A report was made and a call to the father to hear his side of the story. When he arrived, he told a tale of woe. The family's history, the child's rudeness, the mother's lifestyle, etc. I could do very little but listen as I knew almost nothing about this man, nor was I interested in his family history.
What happened between him and his ex-babymother did not interest me. What did was the fear the child displayed, and the stories he told about an abusive life. The child was made to seem 'rude' and uncontrollable. At 11 years old does this condone abuse? I was told by the officers that the mother should be making the report, not I, as I was not a blood relative. What must I do when next this terrified child visits the house I visit, cowering under beds, locking himself in rooms and crying inconsolably. Do I turn a blind eye, or risk visiting the station and be made to appear a busybody and liar. Please tell me what to tell this child, the next time he comes for help.
