BOXERS or briefs?
published: Monday | July 28, 2008

Sacha Walters, Staff Reporter

Grrrr! With this tiger-print tank and silk chocolate-brown boxers, he is ready for anything.

Ever wonder what Asafa Powell wears beneath his speedsuit? Boxers, briefs, or does he go commando?

The tongue in cheek question for most women is usually purely from a sexual perspective or in an attempt to determine a man's personality. But when men set out to decide, boxers or briefs, it depends a great deal on comfort.

For George, 37, he's comfortable in boxer briefs.

"Briefs are a bit more tight and squeeze your private parts," he said.

Jodiann Darby scoffs at the idea of a man wearing briefs. "That is just for children. Grown men are not supposed to wear those. My little brother wears them."

Hugging his assets

George pointed out that the design of boxer briefs, a cross between two styles which incorporates the snug fit of a brief with the length of a boxer, is ideal. When made from a comfortable material like cotton, it prevents the discomfort of traditional briefs.

Jodiann also had high praises for boxer briefs because of the way they hug a man's assets. "For those who don't have such a great body, it actually enhances the positives, taking away from the flaws," the 23-year-old said. "It is just sexy and more mature."

Roger, 47, explores the gamut of underwear options. He wears the three basic styles, briefs, boxers and boxer briefs.

While briefs often get categorised as being for boys only, the professional wears the cotton variety to provide support while running and playing tennis.

Boxers he wears to bed because of their loose fit. Boxer briefs he reserves for occasions when wearing pants to avoid the possible bunching that occurs with traditional boxers.

Partner's opinion

However, it's not solely about comfort. How their partners relate to their underwear is also high on the list. Barack Obama, American Democratic candidate for the United States of America's presidency, when asked about his preference, hinted that visual appeal is also in the mix.

"I don't answer those humiliating questions," Obama told UsMagazine in February this year. "But whichever one it is, I look good in 'em!" he added.

George explained that when he's with a woman, the boxers give easier access; an accessibility which Jehnelle, 25, says she appreciates with her own partner.

"Well, I like it because it is roomy and I have more leverage, especially in terms of foreplay". She notes, as well, that she can play it up in boxers as she often wears them much to the delight of her partner. "Well, I love wearing his boxers! I find it sexy, not to mention my boyfriend; he truly loves to see me in his oversized boxers."
