The Editor, Sir:Audley Shaw, as a minister of government, is finally "getting into his ackee", as the saying goes. For the first time - to me - his pronouncements seem not to be in a political campaign mode. He is right on target with the criticism of the delay in getting land titles.
The current delay in getting a land title has somehow stymied progress in our country and should not be allowed to continue. The Government should move quickly, implementing a programme/drive in getting every parcel of land in Jamaica surveyed, registered and titled in the next five years or less. This process should be made affordable and decentralised at the parish level.
Lengthy prison sentence
Legislation should be put in place to inflict stiff penalty, including lengthy prison sentences on unscrupulous persons who will commit fraud or otherwise utter forged documents in the processing of land titles. Persons working in the title office should attract more severe sentences. The process should be made much easier for the Government to seize and sell land for the non-payment of taxes.
