Saluting 'The Search'
published: Saturday | August 2, 2008

The Editor, Sir:

I bought a copy of the book, The Search written by Hartley Neita at Jamaica College two days ago about the five boys who were lost in the Blue Mountains 70 years ago.

It is an exciting and fascinating story. What makes it even more interesting is the writing by the author. I have always thought him to be one of the best writers in Jamaica, bettered only, perhaps, by Roger Mais, Victor S. Reid and Claude McKay.

In describing the climb to the peak by these boys he ignores the rules of English grammar and uses one word, walking, as a sentence as well as a paragraph, not only once but three times.

"Walking.

"Walking.

"Walking."

Then he adds: "Step by slow step." No predicate or verb is used, but it is so descriptive.

Cheers! I salute Mr Neita.

I am, etc.,
