Mr Skill to land main feature
published: Saturday | August 2, 2008

The back-to-back race meets at Caymanas Park continues today with overnight allowance horses holding centre stage in the Gerry Skelton Memorial Trophy over 1100 metres.

Also on the 11-race programme is the two-y-o restricted allowance II for the Terremoto Trophy over the round five course, this in honour of the 1998 Guineas, Derby and Superstakes winner.

Five youngsters have been declared and indications are that it will come down to a straight fight between the two winners, WORKING IMAGE to be ridden by former champion jockey Shane Ellis for in-form trainer Anthony 'Baba' Nunes and CALL OF THE WILD, with champion jockey Omar Walker riding for top trainer Wayne DaCosta.

Worked well

Both have worked well to meet this engagement, but preference is for the colt, WORKING IMAGE, who was the more impressive in victory, scoring by 2 3/4 lengths over 600 metres straight on May 24.

The bay colt by Image Maker out of Working Number reports even better for this race and will more than likely make all the running.

DaCosta and Walker should have better luck with the fleet-footed three-year-old gelding, MR SKILL, in the Gerry Skelton Memorial Trophy, the principal feature.

Arguably the fastest three-year-old around, MR SKILL is without a victory in two starts this season. However, the bay gelding by Alisios out of Unatural has been moving exceptionally well at exercise in preparation for this race and none will report fitter.

Ripe for encounter

Although beaten in his two starts this season, MR SKILL should be cherry ripe for today's encounter and despite the claims of FREE FALL, RIO INFINITO and the imported filly SISTER CAT, who is steadily on the upgrade, he should not be caught in the eight-strong field.

MR SKILL was beaten over today's trip by last year's Derby winner, THE BOMBER, when making his seasonal debut in the fast-run Easter Sprint Cup (overnight allowance) on March 24. And two months later he was surprisingly beaten by FLAGAMAN over the distance, but all was apparently not right with him that day.

From all indications, MR SKILL will report a different animal today and looks hard to oppose with only 52.0kg.

Other firm fancies on the card are down in class CAPTAIN BONE over RED GENERAL in the second race over 1200 metres, LA'S DANCER to catch MAGNIFICO and MISS ROSE in the fourth, TASSY'S WHIP in the sixth and SPANISH TOWN to lead home HIGH ROLLER and GOOD SENSE in the seventh race over the straight five course.
