10 must-haves for summer
published: Monday | August 4, 2008

Latoya Grindley, Flair Writer

Summer is here in all its glory and this is the time of year that is considered the time to let loose, bask in the sun and let your hair down, enjoying the numerous events and parties. However, while enjoying the season and its events, you have to ensure that you stay on top of your game, bringing out the true fashionista in you. To be a fashionable woman this summer, there are just some things that you must have. Here are a few:

1. Sunglasses

A must for the summer, not only to block the sun's glare from your eyes, but to be oh, so fashionable. Have fun with sunglasses in various shapes and colours and, not to mention, designs. This year, it's plastic over metal. Oversized sunglasses, aviator-style frames and fun-shaped '70s-inspired styles are some of the flirty and fun ones to beat this time around.

3.

Flip-flops

These still have a little girly edge. They are cute, yet they give you the comfort you need to stand for hours or walk long distances. Great for a day at the beach or to walk the mall while looking for more accessories to add to your fashionable collection.

2. Lipgloss

This is any girl's best friend. Whether it be clear or coloured, you will need those lips to be popping. Walk with at least two in your pocket book and when the time is right, pop one out and give them the extra shine. They come in various colours and flavours, so choose one to your liking, whether fruity or coloured.

4. Sunblock

To be fashionable, you have to be keen on taking care of your skin. And with the increased visits to the beach and increased exposure to the sun, you don't want to look like you were toasted or fried.

5. Pedicures

Nothing is more unattractive than flaunting dirty, dingy toes in flip-flops. Take care of those nails and even if they are unpolished, ensure that they are well-groomed and ready for the town.

6. Modern clutch/clutch-box handbags

Forget about those tote bags when you don't need that added baggage. Just enough to put your lipgloss, cellphone, money/cards in, especially for a night out or a summer function. It screams, chic!

7. Oversized totes

If you want to pack your 'house and land', tote bags are a perfect fit. They come in all designs and especially for the season; colours range from bold and bright to very soft and pretty. Depending on the size, some totes are perfect for a weekend trip or even for a day out on the beach. They are versatile and glam up your hip-looking outfit.

10. Summer dresses

A must for the summer. Flirty, sexy and breathable/ cool are the looks of these items that can be dressed down or up, depending on the occasion. Go with colours like yellow, purple, pink, gold and silver. The combination of black and white and floral are adding some heat as well.

8. Swimsuits

You should own at least one fashionable swimsuit. Note well, fashionable does not necessarily mean skimpy and every effort should be taken to choose a swimsuit which is right for your body type and personality. Comfort is key.

9. Cover-ups

As important as the swimsuit if you are in on being fashionable at the beach. Whether it is a wrap or a pullover, cover-ups are ideal for hot summer days on the sand. Not only do they add comfort but depending on the type, you can create a new outfit with little creativity.
