Bridgmohan wins Regal Gal Stakes
published: Monday | August 4, 2008

MIAMI, Florida (CMC):

Jamaican jockey Jermaine Bridgmohan landed one of the two secondary stakes races on Saturday's race card at the Calder Race Course.

The 20-year-old Bridgmohan won the Regal Gal Stakes for three-year-old fillies going one mile on the dirt aboard the 1-5 favourite Joffe's Run in a time of one minute, 40.77 seconds to claim the US$30,000 first prize for owner Andrew Rosen.

Joffe's Run, a three-year-old chestnut, prepared by one of Florida's leading conditioners Martin Wolfson, stalked the pace, then moved to take over from Amazing, under Ariel Smith, entering the homestretch, and was fully extended to prevail by 2-1/2 lengths.

The victory was one of two on the programme for Bridgmohan. He had to work a little harder this time, but he captured the next race for three, four and five-year-old fillies and mares going five furlongs on the dirt astride the even-money favourite Fly Express in a time of 57.02 secs.

Fly Express, a three-year-old, grey filly, set the pace under pressure along the inside, drew clear in the stretch, then was fully extended to hold Stormy Melody, under Eddie Dominguez, safe for a one-length victory in the US$25,000 sprint.

Earlier on the programme, Dominguez had the leg up on the 6-1 bet Silver Envoy, conditioned by Jamaican trainer Kirk Ziadie and won the US$27,000 third race going 1,100 metres on the turf by three-quarter lengths.

Silver Envoy, a four-year-old, chestnut filly, clocked 1 min, 05.91 secs, after she showed early speed along the inside into the stretch, then was also fully extended to hold off Holly Go Lively, under Juan Leyva.

The victory helped Ziadie increase his tally of wins for the season to 30 and extend his lead at the top of the trainersŐ championship to seven.
