THE Reverends William and Cislyn Powell have been fasting religiously as their son, Asafa, lives the Olympic dream.
The Powells have never been overseas to see their son run, even though they would like to. However, their eyes will be focused on the television set as they hope for their son's success.
"Just this Monday, the church had fasting and I have personal fasting for the athletes and for Asafa and for (Usain) Bolt," William said.
His wife went to church to fast as well and they are asking the church to continue fasting for the athletes' sake.
Portrait of a young son
The cool living room of the Powell home was decorated yesterday with photos of the Powell boys. The first picture that visitors see as they step into the room is a portrait of the youngest son and latest Olympian in the family, Asafa.
As children, the six boys would race against each other. Donovan, Michael, Nigel, Ricardo, Vaughn and Asafa used to line up, each ready to take first place.
"And I set them off and (Asafa) usually came last," William said, laughing. "Because he was the smallest one."
They all used to laugh at him, Asafa's parents revealed.
Growing into the sport
Then there were the sports days at Charlemont High School. The sprinter would outrun all his peers in the 100-, 200- and 400-metre races.
"He just walked and laughed," William said. "The guys couldn't follow him."
