THE HOPES of 60 inner-city students to get a head start in their preparations for Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC)-level mathematics could fall flat if organisers of an annual summer camp fail to raise funds to keep the programme afloat.
HOPE mathematics camp, which is organised by student volunteers from Taylor Hall at the University of the West Indies, Mona, is aimed at preparing inner-city students to sit CSEC mathematics.
The programme, which is in its third year, usually runs for four weeks, but according to Preci Hamilton, one of the organisers, it is in danger of not getting past week one this time around.
"Currently, we have only $20,000 to run the camp and this is woefully inadequate," Hamilton told The Gleaner.
"Our youngsters in the inner city lack positive role models. This camp is important to their development and we would appreciate any help we can get," he added.
The organisers said it would cost $27,000 per student to run the camp. This money would cover the cost for three daily meals, textbooks, past papers and a graduation ceremony.
