The Editor, Sir:As far as we know, the Bible did not say which languages were formed at the Tower of Babel in Genesis 11.
I am almost certain though, that many of the languages the Bible is now translated in were not present, since many of those languages are 'modern languages'. To say that English was there, suggests that the development of English as a language is not known.
I cannot see why interpreting the Bible in Jamaican Patois is causing such a great debate. Are we not proud that, as a people, we have developed a language that the whole world would like to speak?
Every day, I hear different types of people try to speak Jamaican. I was told by a Japanese lady that, "It is the best way to express oneself". I totally agree.
Broaden knowledge
I believe it is good to speak English. I also think Spanish, French, Italian, Portuguese and other languages are very important to speak. As much as possible, we should seek to speak and understand as many languages as possible.
This will certainly broaden our knowledge base and equip us to be 'international people'.
I say a resounding yes to a Jamaican Patois Bible any day. I would certainly prefer to read the Holy Scriptures in my own lan-guage than in this borrowed one I was forced to learn at school.
I am, etc.,
