Jamaica's entertainment scene boasts more parties than days gone by and, as a result, more choices for teens.
While the parties vary, party promoters insist that the appeal is the same: cheap prices; a good gimmick; and most important, if it's well known.
"First, you need to convince patrons that the party will 'sell off' and this can be done by ensuring that there is good music, good vibes and even a good flyer," said Alix Stamp, a 17-year-old party promoter.
Stamp - who assisted in the promotion of Toxic Impulse and Black Rain parties - said that when people see the fliers, that image must stick in their heads.
key ingredients
As for one of the promoters of Heineken Yesterdays and Mello Vibes, he believes there are several key ingredients.
"Liquor is an incentive. When it comes to drinks, you could make them free or charge at the bar," said Gyete Ghartey, a partner in the GLK Entertainment group.
Ghartey added that, there are other pulling cards, such as the selector and the event's reputation.
With the increase in choices, 18-year-old Stephanie Barnes says her choice is simple.
"My choice is based on how many other friends are going," she said.
Other factors she highlighted were prices and location.
"Parties are businesses to promoters, so it's all about competition, and this brings out the best in them," said 18-year-old Alwaine Thorpe, Kingston brand manager of the Yungnfresh Entertainment.
Whatever the pull may be, it is obvious that promoters eagerly await patrons' decisions.
