The Editor, Sir:I would like to openly congratulate the Culture Minister, Olivia 'Babsy' Grange and the Bruce Golding-led JLP administration for having reintroduced the Grand Independence Gala. They really show that they have at least some of the nation's interest at heart. I really would like to know why the PNP government put an end to these significant celebrations. (I guess they were busy fighting each other in the 'PNP camp' and didn't realise that our country should be celebrating its Independence). Thumbs up Babsy, Bruce & JLP team! I'm sure the GG, ambassadors and the nation at large are proud of your initiative.
However, I must say that I was not pleased with a few of the things that were a part of the celebrations.
compensation
The effigies of the National Heroes and personalities: The only ones I could easily recognise were Nanny of the Maroons (because of her skirt and wrapped head), Marcus Garvey (because he usually wears a hat and is of a dark complexion), and Bob Marley (because of the dreadlocks), and the only reason I identified Ms Lou is because of the bandana and my knowledge of her tremendous contribution to our nation. (The effigy representing her looked more like a 'dan-gerous and unhappy dog').
All the other heroes basically looked the same, so much so that a radio announcer said one of them looked like 'Usain'. Justice was not done to these highly esteemed individuals. The designer(s) need to apologise, and the Government maybe should compensate by hastily making both cultural icons - Bob and Ms Lou - National Hero and Heroine respectively, bring the total to nine. [This maybe would make many people feel better].
The concert performances: Some were very good - like Freddie McGregor and Etana, however; why did D'Angel sing about 'u know u baby fada?' and QQ 'mi neva know de use of har till mi loose har ... neva know d use of har till she gone ... ', and some other 'crappy' performers - why did they perform?
outside of the box
What really do these things have to do with our Independence. Some of those artistes should not even have been listed, and if so they should have been scrutinised prior to their performance.
The only excuse I could think of now is that the organisers wanted to show how much our society has gone to a state where almost any and every-thing is accepted. Did you see the PM's face - he was as myself, seemingly not pleased with the majority of dancehall acts as they were not promoting our Independence in a good light. And why did Roy Rayon close the show (acts like his should have been the main features of the concert). Next time, organisers please think a bit 'outside of the box!'
Despite these negatives though, the fireworks, cars, bikes, and all were very good. It was a good show down. Thumbs up Babsy. You are a 'Royal Jamaican Queen'. Love and respect to the world. Keep it up! Whoever is in charge next year, please keep the standards high and the celebrations ongoing. God Bless You Jamaica!
I am, etc.,
