Constant Spring Masters came from behind to edge defending champions Hanover Masters 2-1 on Independence Day in the final of the Kirkvine Football Extravaganza at Kirkvine Sports Club in Manchester.

Paul 'Tegat' Davis gave the defending champions the early lead, but Spring stormed back to equalise, and prolific striker Moses Brown struck the game winner late to give the Kingston and St Andrew Masters League Association (KSAMLA) team a well-deserved 2-1 win over Hanover Masters.

Hanover Masters were seeking their fifth straight Kirkvine title while Constant Spring were competing in the Extravaganza for the first time. KSAMLA's other entries, Christian Ambassadors, Kush and Harbour View, failed to advance past the first round.

Inter-bauxite TT

In the opening men's team match of this year's Inter-Bauxite Table Tennis League, visitors Alpart trounced defending champions Windalco 4-1 at the Kirkvine Sports Club.

Robert Gabay of Alpart thrashed defending singles champion George Hyman 3-0. Dervon Parchment overpowered Justin Allen 3-0 and Oliver Miller came from behind to clip Wayne Aird 3-2 in singles matches. Gabay and Ernest Allen (Justin's brother) eased past Hyman and Aird 3-0 in doubles for Alpart's four victories.

Former singles champion Mark Gregory turned back Ernest Allen 11-6, 3-11, 11-8, 11-5 (3-1) to pull one back for Windalco.

Portsmouth, AS Roma in top-of-table clash

Portsmouth and AS Roma face-off in tomorrow's top-of-the table clash as action in the Linford Jones Under-13 Portmore Football League continues with a triple-header at Cumberland playing field. Match time 12:30 p.m.

Portsmouth and AS Roma are on nine points but the former lead with a superior goal difference.

In other games on the day, Cumberland seek their second win of the season when they take on Waterford at 1:45 p.m., while Passagefort United battle Hellshire United at 3 p.m.

Two matches were played on Wednesday. Portsmouth outscored Cumberland 4-2 while Waterford and Hellshire United ended goalless.

Portmore, Rodwood in U-17 final

Portmore United and Rodwood will battle it out in the final of the Pines Imaging Centre/Keith Gentles-sponsored Portmore Under-17 football competition tomorrow at the Ferdie Neita Park. Match time is 3 p.m.

Portmore United and Rodwood drew 1-1 in the preliminary round and this set the stage for a hot final battle. Portmore, coached by veteran Jackie Walters, go into the match as favourites but don't rule out a Rodwood victory as the Floyd Coke-coached team is a determined bunch.

In last Sunday's semi-finals, Portmore United hammered Cumberland 6-0 while Rodwood defeated Daytona 2-0.

Brown takes Lasco Chess Champs

National Master Equitable Brown won the 2008 Lasco National Chess Championship after battling for 6 1/2 hours to secure a hard-fought final-round draw against National Master Mark Holness at the Norman Manley Law School recently.

Holness missed a number of chances to win the game against Brown after emerging two pawns up in the middle of the game and having Brown against the ropes for most of the clash. Brown, however, refused to give up and fought on to salvage an incredible draw and with it a critical half point to end on eight points from 11 games and claim his first hold on the national title.

Second was shared by Holness and National Master Brandon Wilson who each ended on seven points.

The final points standings were: First: Equitable Brown (eight points), second to third NM Brandon Wilson and NM Mark Holness (seven points each), fourth Damion Davy (6.5), fifth: Stuart James (six), sixth: Alain Morais (5.5), seventh: Ian Wilkinson (five), eighth to 10th: Zachary Ramsay, NM Andrew Mellace and Daren Wisdom (4.5 each).
