published: Saturday | August 9, 2008

Donovan Pagon ... rescued Melbourne with a fine 95. - File

MELBOURNE BATSMAN Donovan Pagon dug deep to anchor his team with an impressive knock, eventually pushing them to an easy 88-run win over Lucas in the opening round of the JCA All-Island limited-over competition on the weekend.

In his vital stay at the crease, the 25-year-old batsman scored a crucial 95 runs, which has seen him named The Gleaner Performer of the Week.

The former Wolmerian, who was eventually run out five runs short of a deserved century, came to the crease with Melbourne struggling at 44 for three. The West Indies and Jamaica batsman, who faced 124 balls struck five fours and an uncharacteristic four sixes, steered his team out of trouble and to victory.
