Defective marine patrol boats
published: Monday | August 11, 2008

The Editor, Sir:

I write about the inefficiency of our vessels to patrol our coastal waters. It is now evident that the drugs-for-guns trade is a booming business. Our marine patrols are unable to track down most of the illegal boats that enter our territorial waters because a lack of once operational vessels. In 2006, 26 vessels of various sizes were purchased at millions of dollars. It is shocking to see that less than half of the vessels are out of service after only two years of operation. They are no better than the fire trucks that were also bought under the previous administration.

Greater care must be taken to prevent a reoccurrence of purchasing units that are ineffective, as well as proper training on how to operate them.

I am, etc.,
