Rocking to Lord Creator's beat
published: Tuesday | August 12, 2008

Trinidadian balladeer Lord Creator. - File

Claim to fame

Trinidad-born singer, whose calypso tones brought variety to Jamaican ska and rocksteady.

One of several performers from the Eastern Caribbean (others being guitarist Lynn Taitt and singer Lord Laro from Trinidad and Tobago, and Barbadian singer Jackie Opel) who settled in Jamaica during the 1960s.

Facts

Recorded Independent Jamaica as tribute to Jamaica's independence from Britain in 1962. Song was produced by Vincent 'Randy' Chin.

Lord Creator cut many hits for the Randy's label including Don't Stay Out Late and Evening News.

One of his hit songs was Babylon, later recorded as Kingston Town, which was covered by British reggae band UB40.

UB40's version of Kingston Town was a comeback of sorts for Lord Creator. He had returned to Trinidad in obscurity when the song was done. The song's success enabled him to return to Jamaica.

Lord Creator (real name Kenrick Patrick) currently lives in Montego Bay.
