The Editor, Sir:
This letter is directed to the Mayor of Kingston:
Dear Mayor McKenzie:
Your enthusiasm to clean up the city is commendable. Indeed, your zeal and apparent embrace of the rule of law, in this regard, seems to be unmatched.
Case in point is the order to demolish premises at 14 Caledonia Avenue. According to The Gleaner report, persons have been there for up to 30 years, yet they must relocate in five days. What is wrong in giving them some more time?
Own backyard
I personally would have been more sympathetic to your cause if you had started in your own backyard. I am certain that you are familiar with the extortion that takes place at the Coronation Market.
To park in that vicinity, especially from Thursday to Saturday, requires a fee (usually $50) from men who claim they are providing security.
If you are as tough and upholder of the law as you declare, then start in your backyard, Coronation Market, or your motives will continue to be suspect.
I am, etc.,
ANTHONY CARTER
