LETTER OF THE DAY - What happened when this reader called 119 Police Control
The Editor, Sir: Perhaps I am in error, thinking that 119 Police Control is supposed to perform similarly to the 911 of the United States, where emergency calls are received by police dispatchers who take information and direct officers to the scene of a crime, accident or emergency in a timely manner.

Insurance merger should be blocked

The Editor, Sir: Recently it was announced that there would be a merger of the two major health insurance companies in Jamaica - Blue Cross and Sagicor. I am really flabbergasted that this announcement did not generate the level of debate and attention that such a frightening situation should have evoked.

Praying for gold a selfish desire

The Editor, Sir:While I do realise the tremendous sense of excitement and pride that Jamaicans feel with the chances to make history at the Beijing Games, I find it comical and a even ironic that churches and church leaders have come out on record...

Tertiary fees a challenge

The Editor, Sir: A recent letter 'High cost of tertiary education in Jamaica' published in The Gleaner of Wednesday, August 13, 2008, which revealed that the Mico University College students who access tuition financing from the Student Loan Bureau (SLB) are required to deposit half of the tuition, if true, is most disturbing.

Noteworthy - Hanging no deterrent

I am frightened by the increasing murder rate, and more so because there was a threat on my life by one of my youthful relatives. Despite such unfortunate circumstances, I am still strongly opposed to the view that hanging is an effective deterrent in law enforcement.
