Jamaica's 10 outclass Dominica
published: Saturday | August 16, 2008

Jamaica got their West Indies women's cricket tournament off to a winning start following a comprehensive nine-wicket win over first-timers Dominica in St Lucia yesterday.

The Jamaicans, who played with 10 players due to the non-arrival of four other members of the team, who had to overnight in Barbados due to flight problems in the Eastern Caribbean, dismissed Dominica for 49 and, in reply, made 50-1.

Bowling for Jamaica, pacers Shaniel Daley, daughter of former Jamaica player Aaron, took 6-11 and Karla Cohen, 2-3. While batting, Jodian Morgan made 12 not out and captain Herma Nathan, 15 not out, this for the loss of West Indies player, Stephanie Taylor, 12.

The result apart, the day was a frustrating one for Jamaica, as not only did they not have their full complement of players, but they were not scheduled to play yesterday as today marks the official start date of the tournament.

Cricket Operations Officer of the Jamaica Cricket Association (JCA), Brian Breese, is not pleased.

"I am amazed that four players and the manager of the team are still in Barbados and yet still we were asked to play a match one day before the scheduled start of the tournament.

"And to make matters worse, we are expected to play again tomorrow (today) with 10 players against a much stronger team, St Vincent and Grenadines. This cannot be accepted," he added.
