  • Gleaner, Petrojam in KO football final

    Former champions The Gleaner will oppose Petrojam this afternoon in the Scotia Bank-sponsored KSAFA Business House KO football final at the Edward Seaga Sports Complex starting at 3:30. The Gleaner, champions in 2006, advanced to the final after beating league leaders UWI 9-8 on penalty kicks at Mona recently, while Division Two campaigners Petrojam clipped Division One team Carib Cement 3-2 to earn their spot. Significantly, both teams contested the 2006 final which saw The Gleaner win on penalty kicks. Admission to the game is $200. There will be a gate prize of a barbecue grill.

  • Portsmouth, Cumberland in hot football battle

    Portsmouth (18), leaders after six rounds in the Linford Jones Under-13 Football League, will take on third-place Cumberland (12) in a hot battle, the feature match of a tripleheader at the Passagefort playing field on Monday. Kick-off time 1:45 p.m.

    Hellshire and Waterford face-off at 12:30 p.m in the opening game in a bottom-of-the-table clash while fourth-place Passagefort United (six) welcome second-place AS Roma (15) in the final match at 3:00 p.m. In games played on Wednesday, AS Roma had the biggest win of the day, whipping Hellshire United 4-0 while Cumberland beat Passagefort United 3-1 and Portsmouth edged Waterford 1-0.

  • Portmore United win U-17 crown

    Ramon Whittaker scored a 100th-minute, extra-time goal as Portmore United won the Pines Imaging Centre-sponsored Portmore Under-17 Football League against Rodwood at the Ferdie Neita Park last Sunday.

    Rodwood had their moments when they seemed likely to score first in regular play. Their best chance came when super sub Ricardo Davis got away on goal. He, however, botched a sitter five minutes into the second half, kicking wide with Portmore's goalie Shamai Briscoe at his mercy. Portmore United's captain, Brenton Griffiths, was shown the red card by FIFA referee Dave Peterkin for a dangerous challenge on a Rodwood player with five minutes remaining in the game.

    At the end of the match, Dr Welsford Sinclair, radiologist and manager of Pines Imaging Centre, handed over the championship trophy to the Portmore United team.

  • Portmore cricket starts tomorrow

    The Petcom/MegaMart Portmore Metropolitan Cricket League bowls off tomorrow morning at 10:00 a.m. with a press conference, uniform parade and three matches at three different venues in Portmore. The press conference will be at the Bridgeport Sports Ground.

    In the morning's games, Colours International will oppose Reid's Pen at Bridgeport, defending champions Ken's Wildflower welcome Belmont at their new Ken's Wildflower ground and MegaMart Developmental squad battle Washington CC at Waterford High School.

  • Racing Fraternity Football League

    Defending champions Caymanas Track Limited (CTL) and Owners have topped their respective zones in the 2008 Racing Fraternity Football League. Both have advanced to the semi-finals along with Farriers and Assistant Trainers, the respective runners-up. CTL topped Zone A with 11 points from five matches, representing three wins and two draws, while Farriers were a point behind with three wins, a loss and a draw. In Zone B, Owners topped the standings with 11 points, representing three wins and two draws. They finished a point ahead of Assistant Trainers and Exercise Riders jointly in second, but Assistant Trainers advanced to the semis by virtue of a better goal average. The semi-finals are scheduled for August 28 at Ironside ground, Gregory Park, with CTL up against Assistant Trainers and Owners versus Farriers. Meanwhile, the knockout competition got under way last Monday with Owners, Assistant Trainers, Landscape and Farriers winning their matches.

  • Best of the Bestpool tourney

    The 'Best of the Best' Part I double elimination eight-ball pool tournament will take place on August 23 and 24 at the Hot Shots Pool Bar, 103 Constant Spring Road (Consumer Plaza) starting at 1:30 p.m. each day. The event offers a first prize of $70,000 plus a trophy, second prize of $30,000 and trophy, third and fourth prizes of $10,000 each, while players finishing from fifth to eighth place will each receive $5,000. There will also be a $5,000 cash incentive for the best female player. Entry fee is $2,500 and entries will close on Friday, August 22 at 9:30 p.m. Sponsors are Allied Protection Limited, Tropicair Metal Products Limited, WSI, TDC Products along with Century Wrecker Service.   • Wray & Nephew skittles action

    Dragon and Mystix tied at 5-1/2 points in Wray & Nephew premier league skittles action last Sunday at Chelsea Bar and Grill. Both teams were locked at 5-5 when the decider ended in dispute, but the president of the Jamaica Skittles Federation, Sam Allen, who was on hand, ruled it as a draw.

    In the second match at the same venue, defending champions Rowe's Strikers and Cherry's Strikers were locked at 3-3 when the match was curtailed by a power outage. It has been rescheduled. Eastern All-Stars lead the premier league standings, ahead of Cherry's Strikers, Mystix and Dragon.

  • Rowe captures chess open title

    Jamaica's first Super National Master (SNM), Duane Rowe won the second staging of the Independence Chess Open held at the Rooms on the Beach Hotel in Ocho Rios from August 2 to 3. Rowe took the first event after scoring five points from six games, while second place also with five points went to FIDE Master Warren Elliott who was relegated to second on a tie-break. Third place went to defending champion and current national champion National Master Equitable Brown who ended on 4.5 points. The amateur section was won by newcomer David Bailey who gained five points from six games, losing only to Tewana Mellace in the fifth round. Adrian Allen also finished on five points, but had to settle for second after the tie-break system was employed. The Independence Open is the newest tournament on the Jamaica Chess Federation calendar and is staged annually in Ocho Rios by the Seven Rivers Chess Club during the Independence period. Sponsors for 2008 included RBTT Bank, Jamaica Money Market Brokers Limited, Passage to India and Sensations Gift Shop.

  • Colin Fagan domino

    Ken's Wildflower and Passagefort United are the unbeaten teams in the Colin Fagan domino competition following the third round of matches last Sunday. Playing at home, Ken's Wildflower trounced Westport United 300-229, Garveymeade beat Portsmouth United 300-263 in another home match while Passagefort United stopped the previously unbeaten Waterford United 300-282 in an away match and home team Westchester United beat Portmore Lane Tigers 300-278. The matches scheduled for tomorrow's fourth round are: Portmore Lane Tigers at home to Ken's Wildflower, Westport vs Westchester, Portsmouth vs Waterford and Passagefort vs Garveymeade. Home teams named first. The competition is sponsored by Colin Fagan, member of parliament for South East St Catherine.
