Scary but exciting
published: Tuesday | August 19, 2008

Latoya Grindley, Gleaner Reporter

Looks like we're about to go mountain climbing. Lifestyle team of (from left) Latoya Grindley, Sacha Walters, Keisha Shakespeare-Blackmore, Nashauna Drummond and Daviot Kelly (sitting above) prepare to go zipping along the Zip Line.

From the minute we got to Mystic Mountain, the scaredy cats on the Lifestyle team soon emerged from their brave facade.

Being elevated about 700 feet above ground on the sky explorer was quite a treat. The view (that only Keisha Shakespeare and I could appreciate), was amazing. Nashauna Drummond and Sacha Walters, gripped the security bars for dear life and refused to look anywhere but straight ahead.

Driver

On the bobsled, I was the driver and Keisha my 'passenger'. Less than 10 seconds into the ride, my laughter turned into screams for "Driver"! I forgot about being in control, even forgetting to use the brakes. Keisha, the concerned passenger, kept screaming, "brake up, brake up", but to no avail. With my eyes at times closed, it's either I unconsciously continued to press full speed ahead, or the brakes (as I'm convinced) weren't working. I would definitely do it again.

On the zip line canopy tour, Daviot took the spotlight. The tour was both exciting and scary. And, as for the surprise, this is not for weak hearts. When Daviot let out a 'manly' scream, after going first, I realised, 'it was no joke'. Watching Keisha, the nervous wreck, and hearing Nashauna whisper, "Jesus Christ", a thousand times, I suddenly felt the urge to use the restroom.

Terrified

Dangling in mid-air on a piece of rope, I tried to persuade the tour guide to take it easy because I needed to go badly. He wasn't convinced. I kicked and screamed like a baby. It left me terrified and my eyes were filled with tears. Afterwards, I felt weak trying to recover.

Despite this, the day was well spent - lots of laughter, screams and even swearing. Looking back, I can't help but laugh, especially the way my colleagues behaved. I only regret there was no video recorder.
