Sacha Walters, Staff Reporter
Lifestyle Coordinator Nashauna Drummond (front) and reporter Sacha Walters look quite relaxed on the bobsled ride. That would soon change!
I hate roller coasters or anything that simulates plummeting you at unimaginable speeds to an uncertain end. What's the point? The adrenaline rush, you may say, but that only leaves you feeling weak in the knees and eternally thankful you still have life.
But, it was work and a girl's got to work right? I guess people have worse jobs.
I trusted my life to Nashauna Drummond, Lifestyle co-ordinator, and locked my car onto hers. She'd be the driver, although with less driving experience than myself, I preferred if she came head-on with whatever dips and curves, which were sure to come our way. But, it also meant she would have full control of the brakes. Yikes! So, more than anything, this would feel like a free fall.
Pretending maybe?
But there I was, waiting to bobsled into the unknown. With a goofy grin and a thumbs up, Nashauna indicated she was ready. Tell you the truth, I think she was faking not being nervous. You know the type, who pretend they've got it all under control but beneath it all they're shaking in their boots? You can spot it in the eyes.
Off we careened and, no, I didn't hold back. When I felt as if we were going to slip off the tracks, I screamed. When it felt as if Nashauna was as helpless, as I was, shouting her 'woo hoos', I screamed and then we came to a grinding halt, greeted by one of the attendants, who cautioned Nashauna about her braking techniques. After that, it was smooth sailing but that was the easy part.
Tree swinging
After the bobsled, we were off to swinging from the trees. Totally suited up with what looked like climbing gear, it was time to swing from tree to tree.
Oh, the view from here isn't bad. Pleasant actually. But there was that surprise part of it all. I was supposed to go first. Oh, no.
So, I volunteered Daviot. While he hung in mid-air, receiving his instructions, we just heard, "ready".
Once he confirmed, Daviot disappeared into thin air. No way was I going to go after him.
As we gradually ran out of people, I had to take heart and just get it over with.
I closed my eyes while I hung in mid-air.
"Ready?" was shouted from down below. I answered, but apparently not too audibly. They had to ask two more times. It was over in what seemed like under a second but, man, was it scary.
I must admit, I hit the guide in appreciation of my graceful fall.
