The death toll from Tropical Storm Gustav has been increased to 12.

The Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM), which confirmed the deaths, said the figure could rise even further.

The ODPEM said there are still several cases of missing persons, which the police are investigating.

Up to yesterday afternoon, the ODPEM said 312 people remained in 24 shelters islandwide.

The ODPEM said many of the people who had occupied the shelters returned to their houses as weather conditions improved.
