issues: AA deal may not be bad
published: Saturday | September 6, 2008

The Editor, Sir:

It never ceases to amaze me, the behaviour of our people. On the one hand we ask for competition because monopoly hurts. Look at what has been said and is being said about JPS.

The event of the billing and subsequent demonstration by some Portmore residents are clear cases of the unacceptable behaviour of monopolies.

While it may appear as a poor decision, I think it is prudent to encourage American Airlines (AA) to continue flying into our island.

Those who argue that the money could be pumped into Air Jamaica have a point; but will Air Jamaica employees commit to continuous service in spite of challenges of any kind? My opinion from past actions suggests that this is not an option.

We need an alternative, and if AA is the choice, I agree with the decision.

The death of Air Jamaica?

The Editor, Sir:

This idea of assisting American Airlines in sustaining continuing, regular, uninterrupted services to the island in the near future is garbage. Air Jamaica should be the airline needing the most help.

To give American Airlines such a wide financial guarantee to regain lost revenue at the expense of the Jamaican Government is outrageous!

The money from the fund should be geared towards sustaining our national identity at the local business level.

I hope Minister Bartlett will reconsider his action for the good of our country.

If the minister allows this deal to stand, it might be the ultimate death of our national airline.
